Jafakash Aurat Project, Supporting Skill & Micro Enterprise Development amongst Gawadar Women

Overall goal of the Ministry of Women Development (MoWD), Government. of Pakistan is social, economic and political empowerment of all Pakistani women and eradication of poverty. The main objective of the Ministry is "to remove inequalities and imbalances in all the socio-economic development sectors and to ensure objective is to ensure the participation”. These are also the integral parts of the UN Millennium Development Goals. Therefore the Ministry of Women Development engaged Khushhali Bank Limited to initiate Jafakash Aurat Project, Supporting Skill and Micro Enterprise Development amongst Gawadar Women.

  Objectives and Scope:

Broadly, the Women Development – crossing cutting theme has thrust upon social, economic, political and legal empowerment of women. By and large most of the development efforts have been directed at urban women. This project exclusively focuses on poorest of the poor women of Gawadar District. Being essentially a project focusing on the development and empowerment of poor women, it establishes a strong relationship with priority and emphasizes current five year plan and also with other Women Development Projects under the present year's PSDP of MoWD.

The current development in Gawadar (road access & port construction) has opened new opportunities for economic activities including those where women can play a major role. The local residents’ population, visitors, investments in industrial and service sectors are growing at a fast pace creating economic (and to a smaller extent) entrepreneurial opportunities for women in sectors such as hospitality, poultry, hand craft, jewelry making, secretarial services etc.

  Job Opportunities

The project aims at providing skills to Gawadar women to generating/improving income generation capacity presented by the existing market conditions. Over a period of three years, approximately 3500 women will be trained in various skills (suited to literate/illiterate women). It is expected that this project will result in creation of approximately 10,000 jobs (2,000 direct and 8,000 indirect jobs).

  Project Implementation:

Jafakash Aurat Project, Gawadar was launched from 1st October 2006. This project was inaugurated on 22nd January, 2006 by the Minister of Women Development (at the time) Nilofar Bakhtiar along with the Chief Minister Baluchistan, Jam Muhammad Yousaf and President of Khushhali Bank Limited.

This project has two components – vocational skills training of women and providing microcredit to enable the women to set up their own microbusinesses or acquiring gainful employment for well being of their economic conditions.

The project has been well received by the local community and is driving considerable response.
